13 Days of U2: Day 1

u2 boy.jpg

I can barely stand it...in 13 days my husband and I are taking our two children, Maeve (11) and Brendan (7) to their first U2 concert at The Forum in Los Angeles and I only have 13 days to make them ready.

Thankfully this is not their first concert (they both saw Mumford and Sons at The Hollywood Bowl and Maeve also saw The Avett Brothers), but it will be their first show indoors. Ahhh, arenas...where the sound system enters your body and reverberates your soul. No pressure, but they better love it, they better have a religious experience. Because hey, seeing U2 is like going to church, right. "The spirit is in the house," as Bono would say.

So in an effort to prepare them for this integral right of passage, I have chosen a few tracks from each of U2’s 13 albums starting with 1980’s Boy and ending with 2014’s Songs of Innocence. Fortunately, they are familiar with many of U2’s songs, but it is worth going through them again before they get to experience all that is a U2 arena show.

Day 1:

Boy (1980)

"Out of Control": See #tbt post

"I Will Follow": Bono says the song is about unconditional love and he sings from the perspective of a mother, yet at the same time he has said it's about the love of God, “nor height, not depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God." (U2 by U2). In any case, looking back at the original video is just as important as knowing the song simply to watch Bono’s classic 80s dance moves…and Adams hair…it’s its own planetoid.
